What is Muay Thai Kickboxing?
Muay Thai Kickboxing, aka Thai boxing, is a striking art that was developed many centuries ago in Thailand. Origins date back as early as the 12th Century, where Thai Warriors used these techniques during their battles with Burma, Khumer, and Cham (Vietnam). It evolved from Krabi-Krabong, literally sword and baton, the hand-to-hand tactics of the Thai army. In the early 20th Century, time limits, boxing gloves as well as a uniform set of rules were introduced to the sport. Today, the Royal Thai Army, U.S. Navy Seal teams, and members of the C.I.A. and other government agencies use these techniques in addition to other unarmed combat training. Muay Thai Kickboxing is also a national sport in Thailand, similar to football or basketball in the United States.
What will I learn from Muay Thai Kickboxing?
Muay Thai Kickboxing will enable you to use your body as an effective and efficient weapon. Muay Thai is often referred to as the “Art of 8 Limbs” utilizing punches, knees, elbows, kicks, and some body throws.
Translation into ancient times makes the Muay Thai practitioner’s hands become like a sword and dagger, the shins and forearms act as protective shields against blows, the elbow is used to fall opponents like a heavy sledgehammer and the knees and legs become the axe and staff. The knees, elbows, and punches are constantly searching and testing for opening gaps in the adversary’s defense while grappling and trying to throw his enemy to the ground for the final fatal kill. Some even called Muay Thai the art of nine body parts, where the head and head butting is also used as a weapon.
Why study Muay Thai Kickboxing and do I need to be in shape?
It isn’t necessary for you to want to engage in combat to learn and benefit from the techniques of Muay Thai Kickboxing. Many people study Muay Thai Kickboxing for stress relief, to develop confidence, cardiovascular fitness, strength, and for self-defense in addition to many other reasons. It’s an excellent form of exercise.

What do I need to get started?
To get started you will need to bring a healthy attitude, a contagious smile, a willingness to learn and loose fitting workout clothes.
While we offer some basic community equipment you will eventually need: 14 / 16 oz boxing gloves, boxing hand wraps, mouth guard, shin guards, (men may want to consider a cup as well). You may train barefoot or in wrestling shoes, but no street shoes are allowed on the mat.
